Although the end of March officially marked the beginning of spring, Italians traditionally kick off the season on April 25th.
Liberation Day is a national holiday in Italy which celebrates the end of Nazi occupation and fascist rule. Many Italians make it a very long weekend being that May 1st is also a national holiday. In Italian it is referred to as the ponte or “bridge” of April 25th. This year is even more unusual because Easter also falls on April 21st. So now that you understand the ponte mindset, you can start planning your getaway!
The lovely seaside town of Cesenatico is perfect. Located along the Riviera Romagnola on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, it’s a lovely combination of history and culture. This small town is home to the port designed by Leonardo Da Vinci (il Porto Canale Leonardesco) where there are museums, restaurants, markets and charming local restaurants, with brightly colored external walls.
Every year Cesenatico hosts its international regatta Vele di Pasqua (Easter sails). The 45th edition will be held on April 20, 21, 22 at the Levante and Ponente beaches in Cesenatico. Whether you sail or not, you’ll definitely enjoy a spectacular, colorful show.
You can also enjoy a stroll along the Porto Canale for Mercatino delle Vele– an artisan market showcasing all sorts of local crafts and foods on April 7, 14, 20, 21, 22 and May 1 and 5.
What seaside town would be complete without its signature seafood dish? Cesenatico celebrates the many delicious varieties of Mediterranean fish, or pesce azzurro as they’re generically known, from April 25 through 28 with its annual Azzurro come il Pesce festival. Throughout the city center, and along the water, you’ll find street food vendors, local restaurants, chefs, and caterers promoting the various fish-based local specialties.
The city center will also be hosting a market with local, artisan products and crafts as well as other various gastronomical specialties. The hours are from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm and from 6 pm to 10 pm.
