In Italy, when we think about autumn, we imagine the leaves falling, trees which are tinged with red and yellow, the season of mushroom picking and of course, the famous chestnut festival in Combai. In the province of Treviso, among the beautiful hills of Prosecco, autumn is synonymous with a special kind of chestnut- a marrone– which are distinguished by their larger shape and their lighter color with dark streaks.
Combai has been celebrating its prized chestnuts every autumn since 1945. This year’s dates run from October 11 to November 3, 2019. The vast menu includes first courses to desserts and the star ingredient is of course, the chestnut. Here are some typical dishes you can expect to find: gnocchi, tortelli, stewed meat with chestnuts and polenta, grilled chicken with chestnuts, sausage with chestnuts and a special brew of combaiota beer, cakes and biscuits.
The festival’s rich program of events, ranging from daytime walks in the woods to night excursions under the stars, is guaranteed to entertain the whole family. Every weekend, arts and crafts exhibitions, music and shows will liven up the streets of the town.
