The Lights

First of all, Florence is a walking city and you’ll immediately notice the spectacular lights adorning all the major streets throughout the historic center. Each year the city reinvents the decorations changing the style, colors, and arrangements which creates a brand new scene year after year. In addition to this, you can also enjoy the F-Light Festival from December 8 through January 9, 2022. This is a fabulous display of lights in various locations throughout the city including Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Vecchio. This year’s theme is “Reflections. Where We Are and Where We Are Going.” You won’t want to miss this!

 Christmas Markets

You may not think of Florence for its Christmas markets, but there are actually several located throughout the city. Weihnachtsmarkt, the German Christmas market, is located in Piazza Santa Croce and runs through December 19th. Wooden chalet stands will be offering all sorts of unique trinkets and gifts as well as northern European specialties. The little ones will delight in Santa’s house and games and workshops geared for them. Lots of music and entertainment as well!

This year, the Fortezza da Basso will also be hosting a Christmas market along with a brand new “Ice Village” complete with the longest ice-skating rink in all of Europe! It loops around the pond and is sure to provide hours of fun for all ages. Don’t miss a chance to see a spectacular view of the city on the giant Ferris Wheel 55 meters up into the air.

A third market is set up inside the San Donato shopping mall just outside the city in Novoli. A total of 45 wooden chalet stalls will adorn the large indoor space inside the mall. Open every day from 10 am to 7 pm through January 9, 2022.

Christmas Flavors in Florence

While you are strolling through the streets, make sure and try some roasted chestnuts from one of the numerous vendors, or stop in a cafe and have a slice of panettone or pandoro classic Christmas cakes with a cup of Italian hot cocoa. It is so thick and rich, you’ll need a spoon!
