The most beloved Christmas markets in Italy are the Christmas Markets of Aosta! The smallest city in Italy, Aosta is surrounded by the Alps and borders France and Switzerland.
Marché Vert Noël
The Marché Vert Noël (Christmas Markets of Aosta) is celebrating its 12th anniversary. Its 50 wooden chalets welcome visitors to this little corner called the “Rome of the Alps”, which is often forgotten during the year, but deeply appreciated by tourists and visitors during the holidays.
During Christmas time, from the 23rd of November to the 6th of January, the city of Aosta will be immersed in a Christmas atmosphere, thanks to the set up of the “Alpine village” in the archeological area of the Roman Theater.
The Alpine village will feature wooden chalets and will be decorated with Christmas trees and lights, bonfires, wooden sculptures and much more.
Here, visitors will be able to taste and learn about the traditional food and wine delicacies of Aosta. They will also find gift ideas among the hand-made products such as lace, Christmas decorations, ceramics, wood and glass objects, candles, hand-made soaps, antique objects and furniture, and clothing articles made of boiled wood and felt.
In fact, bringing home a souvenir from the Marché means rediscovering local traditions about which Aosta’s residents are deeply passionate.
Local Flavors
Local food and wine are definitely worth exploring, especially the DOP (Denomination of Protected Origin) and DOC products (Denomination of Controlled Origin) such as Fontina cheese, confectionery, pastries, cured meats, and wines. And during cold days, there’s nothing better than a steaming hot chocolate or vin brûlé (hot, mulled wine).
There will also be plenty of entertainment: live music will be played by folk groups or the various bands of the Valley.
Why visit the Marché? Because it is considered the best Christmas market in the Alps and because it is a perfect occasion to combine Christmas shopping and sport. The Aosta Valley is also famous for its 900 km of ski slopes between Courmayeur and Cervinia and 300km of cross-country trails across the various valleys.
