Every year the magnificent art city of Spoleto opens its curtain and welcomes the world with its Festival of Two Worlds. Its monumental beauty is as intact as its historic vocation to art. The scenes open even before entering its streets, with the majestic Albornoziana Fortress and the magnificent sequence of arches of the Ponte delle Torri. A few hundred meters away, a Roman Theater from 100 b.C., the seventeenth-century theater Caio Melisso Spazio, the fourteenth-century complex of San Nicolò and the nineteenth-century Teatro Nuovo all coexist in a refined harmony. You’ll find Lombard and Gothic churches, medieval cloisters, auditoriums and precious noble palaces and the great square of the Cathedral, with its Basilica erected in the twelfth century.
In this incomparable location, the Festival of the Two Worlds was born in 1958. The composer Gian Carlo Menotti chose it as the ideal place to found an event that celebrated art in all its forms. Memorable shows went on stage and the Festival soon became an international event bringing some of the greatest protagonists of cinema and theater, famous dancers and choreographers, poets, playwrights and writers.
This year, in its 62nd edition, the Festival of the Two Worlds is still at its core a meeting place between cultures and a famed international event. Under the guidance of Giorgio Ferrara, director of the Festival since 2008, Spoleto has once again become the fascinating place where every summer, from every part of the world, the great arts come together: Opera, Music, Dance, Theater.
The Festival is a thought-provoking event that embraces art and culture as an exchange and opportunity for growth, in spite of every economic and social crisis of our time. The program of events varies from the most classical to the contemporary with prestigious actors and artists as well as showcasing emerging ones.
The Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds takes place this year from June 28th to July 14th.
