In Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany, the most representative architectural beauties are concentrated in that patch of land called Piazza dei Miracoli. The incredible Leaning Tower, the Baptistery, the impressive Cathedral and the Monumental Cemetery are the protagonists of this square. Covered by a lawn, this strictly pedestrian zone took on its current appearance only in the nineteenth century.
The Tower is certainly the most famous bell tower in the world and universally recognized as a monument of interest. Construction began between 1173 and 1274, but it started to lean to one side even before the completion of the third row of arches. The slope seems to be due to the sandy soil on which the foundations are based, only 3 meters depth.
The splendid Cathedral is the central point of the complex. Then there is the Baptistery, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which with its 107.25 m of circumference is the largest baptistery, not only in Italy but in the world. In the northern part of the square there is the Monumental Cemetery, a cloister with a rectangular structure in gothic floral style. According to the legend, it was built on a layer of land brought here by sea from the Holy Land after the second crusade in the twelfth century.
An expert guide will help you appreciate these monuments to the fullest, telling their stories. In the guided tour you’ll see the Tower and the Baptistery from the outside, while the Cathedral includes a visit inside.
You’ll have free time at the end of the guided tour for an ice cream, a souvenir or to pose for a photo before returning by bus to Montecatini.
