Mount Mottarone is one of the most beautiful summits in Italy for its beautiful views overlooking the Cusio area.
The mountain is said to be “between two lakes“, because it is located precisely in a dominant position on lakes Orta and Maggiore.
One way to enjoy this magnificent landscape is to stay for one or more nights in a hotel in the area and discover the territory of Mount Mottarone day by day.
THE HOTEL
The hotel is located on the mountain, 21 km from Stresa. It has eight rooms with private bathrooms decorated in mountain style, with parquet floors and wooden furniture. From the rooms you can enjoy a magnificent view of the six surrounding lakes.
The hotel also has its own restaurant, open every day, and with a wide choice of typical dishes to taste. For breakfast you can have homemade cakes and organic jams, a speciality of this restaurant.
First courses are the ones typical of the region and pasta is homemade. Second courses consist mainly in red meat and game, and the cold meats and cheeses are all fresh and locally sourced. They’re bought from small-scale producers of the area. The desserts are numerous and all homemade.
Your meals will be accompanied by the best white and red wines from Piemonte, Veneto, Tuscany and also Liguria.
What to do in the area?

THE STRESA-ALPINO-MOTTARONE CABLE CAR
The Stresa-Alpino-Mottarone cable car reaches an altitude of 1491 metres above sea level in just 20 minutes. The cable car leaves from the shores of the lake in front of Isola Bella, precisely from Piazzale Lido.
It is divided in two sections, each one with two cabins that can carry a maximum of 35 people. Inside each cabin there is a monitor and a voice that informs passengers of their arrival at their destination, and provides information on the attractions available in the area.
The first section of the cable car starts at 205 m a.s.l. at Lido di Carciano, in Stresa and arrives at the Alpine Resort. Here you can find the Alpinia Botanical Garden, home to numerous botanical species. It is located in a privileged position: it offers in fact a large viewpoint over Lake Maggiore and the Borromean Islands.
The second section starts at 803 m a.s.l. and reaches a flat area below the summit of Mount Mottarone. From here it is possible to reach the peak, located at 1491 m a.s.l., either on foot or by the Mottarone Vetta chairlift.
From the chairlift you can admire an amazing view over a large portion of the surrounding area: the famous Seven Lakes, Monte Rosa, the Po Valley and you can even spot the peaks of the Alps.
ALPYLAND
And if you’re travelling with children, don’t miss Aplyland, the amusement park on the top of Mount Mottarone.
The Alpine Coaster of Mottarone is an attraction very similar to a roller coaster, all downhill, with the difference that each passenger can choose the speed of the ride independently. In fact, the two-seater bobsleighs are equipped with a braking system that the passenger in the rear seat can activate to accelerate or decelerate. The track is 1,200 m long and has a height difference of 100 m.
Sitting in your bobsled, you can admire a view from above of the magnificent territories surrounding the mountain.
SKIING ON MOUNT MOTTARONE
And for those who love skiing, Mount Mottarone offers 21 km of slopes dedicated to alpine skiing, suitable for all levels of difficulty, 5 of which with snowmaking.
The great majority of the slopes are especially suitable for beginners, but there is also a more technical one, the Alpe Corti, that can be ideal for more experienced skiers. From the top of Mount Mottarone, the slope winds down for 2.5 km to a panoramic area on the shores of Lake Maggiore.
The 2018-2019 Mottarone ski season opens on December 8th and will last until April 7th 2019. You can easliy rent skis, snowboards and all the equipment at the local ski rent.
OTHER OPTIONS
The hotel also offers the possibility of renting traditional or electric mountain bikes to explore the area.
Climbing lovers cannot miss bouldering – related events. Mount Mottarone, in fact, is the ideal place to climb both for beginners and more experienced climbers. In addition, it offers a wonderful panorama as a background.
Another activity not to be missed in this area is paragliding, a panoramic flight of rare beauty, given the geographical position of Mount Mottarone.
It is preferable to plan the take-off in the afternoon until sunset, because of the mountain’s morphology. In fact, at this time of day, the thermal currents lose strength and allow the pilot to climb above the peak and enjoy an incredible view.
A take-off with eastern exposure is also available, just a step away from the arrival station of the Stresa-Mottarone cable car. It is ideal for a nice morning panoramic flight over the Borromeo Gulf
