During your stay in Perugia, you can immerse yourself in the Christmas atmosphere and experience all the traditions of this region. Do not miss the annual underground Christmas market at Rocca Paolina, considered one of the most unique in Italy. Nestled between the ancient, medieval streets, the market has been housed for more than twenty years in the fortress dating back to the 1500s.
The Christmas market at the Rocca hosts selected exhibitors from all over Italy with their quality craft products and ingenious creations. The labyrinth of the ancient medieval streets leads visitors on a journey of aromas, flavors, colors and traditional, local foods that make this event unique in its kind.
In addition, the Rocca also hosts numerous workshops for children in the Cannoniera Hall. The little ones can try their hand at making nativity scenes, Christmas decorations, toys and much more and decide whether to take their work home or donate it. Children will also have the opportunity to meet Santa Claus and take a souvenir photo with him.
Another attraction is the San Pietro complex which hosts various events and exhibitions for adults and children during the Season.
Neapolitan nativity scenes from the 1700s will be on display within the Paleochristian Crypt and while in the Gallery you’ll also see holy images, and Christmas cards from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There will also be concerts, conferences and guided tours in abbey.
Even within the complex, there will be workshops for children with playful activities to learn about art and history through curious anecdotes taken from the sources of the Abbey.
During your weekend in Perugia, you can also visit the other Umbrian cities in the surrounding area: Gubbio, which boasts the largest Christmas tree in the world; Assisi, city of St. Francis; Spoleto (60 km), whose beauties are praised in the poems of numerous poets such as Carducci and d’Annunzio; Spello (30 km), built with the pink color of Mount Subasio on which it stands; Orvieto (75 km), defined as a “tall, strange city” by Fazio degli Uberti in his Dittamondo; and finally Lake Trasimeno (Passignano is 28 km away).
