Peccioli, perched on a hill in the Pisan Valdera, is a fascinating medieval village that offers tourists a complete immersion in the history, art and scenic beauty of Tuscany. And when you visit, it’s easy to understand why it won the 2024 “Borgo dei Borghi”, a prestigious award sponsored by the Italian network, Rai.
What to See in the Historic Center
Stroll through the narrow cobbled streets, admiring the ancient stone houses and stately buildings. Visit the Parish Church of San Verano built between the 11th and 12th centuries with its “Moorish” bell tower (19th century), and the Museum of Sacred Art, which houses valuable works of art.
The Museum Complex (Polo Museale): A museum complex that includes the Museum of Sacred Art; the Archaeological Museum, with Etruscan and Roman finds; the Museum of Palazzo Pretorio, with a rich collection of paintings and sculptures; and the Bell Tower, which offers a panoramic view breathtaking view of the surrounding area upon reservation.
Contemporary art: Peccioli is known as the “small Italian capital of contemporary art” thanks to the works scattered throughout the village and in the municipal area by artists such as Vittorio Corsini, Patrick Tuttofuoco, Hidetoshi Nagasawa, Messina and others. The Palazzo Senza Tempo is worth a visit with its magnificent panoramic terrace and the “Endless Sunset” walkway by Patrick Tuttofuoco which can be reached by a convenient lift (floor 3) which connects the multi-story car park and the historic center.
More to See in the Immediate Area
If you have small children and the weather is nice, the Prehistoric Park of Peccioli is worth a visit. Just one km from the historic center, the park is the perfect place for a picnic amongst the giant sculptures of Tyrannosaurus Rex and others.
Peccioli is also an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding area which is full of medieval villages (Ghizzano, Lajatico, Chianni, Casciana Terme), castles and fantastic scenery.
Events and Local Cuisine
Food and wine tastings: All of Tuscany is renowned for its food and wine and Peccioli is certainly no exception. The area is especially known for its prized extra virgin olive oil, honey, truffles, fine wines, ancient grains, cheeses and cured meats. It is located along the Pisan Hills Wine Route which boasts numerous DOCG (Chianti), DOC (Bianco Pisando San Torpè) and IGP wines. Events: Peccioli organizes numerous events throughout the year, including festivals, fairs and cultural events. Among the most important events are the Peccioli Jazz Festival, which takes place in summer, and the Truffle Festival, in autumn.
Getting Here
Peccioli is easily reachable by car, train and bus. The closest train station is Pontedera, from which you can take a bus to Peccioli.
Tip: During the weekend there is a convenient free shuttle from the Coop car park to the center.
