For those who love skiing and breathing the pure mountain air, Campitello Matese, a hamlet in the municipality of San Massimo (province of Campobasso), is the perfect destination. It is the most important ski resort in Molise.
From the village of San Massimo, it climbs for about 12 km along a panoramic road, leading to the plateau of Campitello, which is located in the Matese chain of mountains.
As far as tourism goes, Campitello Matese is one of the largest and most popular ski resorts in central and southern Italy. Tourists have a wide choice of wellness hotels with thermal spas, several residences, restaurants, ski and sport equipment rentals, as well as ski schools with qualified instructors.
The ski resort can count on about 40 km of slopes for alpine skiing, with 4 chair lifts, 2 ski lifts, and a people mover. As of 2016, the new Capo d’Acqua chairlift is also operating. It also has slopes for beginners, intermediate and for more experienced skiers. Three runs are approved by the International Ski Federation for international competitions and you can also do cross-country skiing.
When snow conditions allow, a snow park is also open with lots of downhill slopes. It’s also equipped with a modern snowmaking system for the main runs, both at high altitude and downhill.
The Alpine ski runs are located between 1,450 and 1,890 meters above sea level. On the other hand, cross-country skiers will love the varied, wide plain of the Capo dell’Acqua gorge, up to the slopes of the Gallinola mountain.
