What to See and Do
When you book your Valentine’s Day in Tuscany, you may decide to spend a day of relaxation at the nearby Terme di Petriolo. Located in the astonishingly beautiful Siena province, the waters of this thermal spring are rich in salts with many therapeutic properties unchanged since Roman times.
At Terme di Petriolo, you and your partner can also enjoy various massage services.
Another option is to enjoy a food and wine tour of the Sienese territory. The Val d’Orcia area has given rise to numerous excellencies in the food and wine sector such as the famous Brunello DOCG and DOC Orcia wines.
The Towns of Pienza, Montepulciano, San Quirico and Montalcino
Pienza is perched on top of a hill and dominates the entire Orcia valley with a breathtaking view. It is particularly famous for, among other things, its pecorino cheese. A very tasty, semi-aged cheese made with sheep’s milk. Besides being very renowned, this cheese is also very delicious.
You will find many shops where you can buy and taste many varieties of pecorino as well as many other local products, such as the fabulous wines of Val d’Orcia, pici pasta, honey and more.
Next is Montepulciano where you can tour the historic cellars of the city, located in the basements of Tuscan Renaissance palaces and taste the famous Vino Nobile.
San Quirico is another destination not to be missed during your Valentine’s trip to Tuscany. In the Middle Ages, the city was an important stop on the Via Francigena, where pilgrims traveling to the Eternal City were welcomed and given assistance along their journey.
San Quirico d’Orcia offers excellent quality food and wine products: olive oil (typical of the Tuscan production), saffron cultivated and exported since the Middle Ages, and the inevitable red wines. It is in fact here that the name Orcia DOC was born, in order to protect and promote the image of wine and its territory. The undisputed protagonist of Orcia wines is the Sangiovese. In addition to the classic red, we also find Bianco, Rosato and Vin Santo.
The last stop on this wine and food tour is Montalcino, home of the famous Brunello DOCG wine. You couldn’t possibly miss visiting the best local wineries while you’re there. We recommend Casanova di Neri and the Castello di Banfi.
Casanova di Neri is a family-run farm with a production of eight different wines, each with specific characteristics but all attributable to the style of Casanova di Neri and Montalcino.
Castello di Banfi offers prestigious wines: from the great wines of Montalcino (Brunello, Rosso and Moscadello di Montalcino), passing through other prestigious Tuscan denominations, from Chianti, to Bolgheri, to Chianti Classico, to some of the most renowned Piedmontese names.
