Itinerary

The meeting time is at 8.30 am and the meeting point is Teatro Petruzzelli ( Corso Cavour).

Start off with a guided tour with the houses and the churches carved in the rock, where some inhabitants lived until the first half of the 20th Century. Matera is the “City of Stones“, and this unique architecture bears witness to man’s ability to adapt to the environment and the natural context. The original urban centre was in fact developed from the natural caves dug into the rock, which were then shaped into increasingly complex structures. Beauty carved into the rock, one might say.

Visit one or two of the rocky churches, the “cave houses” and the newly restored cathedral recently reopened to the public.

The guide will lead you step by step on a journey to see all the monuments and the most characteristic corners of the city, walking among cave churches and cave houses, to finally arrive at the cathedral, built in the Romanesque-Pugliese style. After that, you’ll have some free time to have lunch and discover the city by yourself in the afternoon.

The guided tour will last approximately 8h (transfert included).
