What could be more Christmassy than a vintage train traveling through the snow-capped Abruzzo Apennines? The journey itself would be a fantastic experience during this magical season, but what if I told you that this train also stops at some of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the province of L’Aquila?
The vintage train departs from the Sulmona train station and stops at the mountain villages of Campo di Giove and Roccaraso or Campo di Giove and Castel di Sangro. You will have 3 hours in each village at your disposal to explore the markets, taste local treats, and stroll through the avenues all decorated for Christmas.
The powerful “Bombardone”, a D445 locomotive dates back to the late 1920s. It will feel like you have boarded the Harry Potter train or that of the Christmas favorite, The Polar Express. The interior is made of wood and there is also a convenient luggage compartment for the free transport of strollers, bikes, and bulky luggage.
