Experience the Myrtle Harvest

Myrtle fruit ripens towards the end of November with the harvest continuing through January.

The harvest consists of detaching the myrtle berries from the plant, without damaging the shrub. Since no machine can harvest with the same degree of delicacy, it is still done by hand.

This is where you come in! Flanked by experts, you’ll pick the ripe berries from their branches by using a comb-like tool that strips the branches. The berries are then dropped into buckets or onto sheets placed under the plant. At this point the ripe fruit will be easily detached when the “comb” passes, while the leaves will remain firmly tied to their petioles.

With basket in hand, you’ll detach the ripe berries from their branches, being careful not to break the leaves nor the petioles attached to the plant. The myrtle berries are completely organic which means that no herbicides or pesticides have been used at any stage.

Experiencing the harvest is certainly something unique. You’ll learn all about this fundamental resource for local harvesters and how to keep the plant healthy so that it can be harvested the following season.

To ensure that the myrtle liqueur is of the highest quality and, above all, doesn’t lose its color, aroma, or flavor, the berries must be processed immediately. It is precisely for this reason that local artisans begin macerating the berries in the liqueur within one to two days.

To find out more about myrtle harvesting and processing, all you have to do is book a minimum stay of three nights in this B & B and experience it first hand!
